2013 Home of the Year
REFLECTION ON LONGBOAT KEY
"After homeowners Paul and Vicki White selected Edgewater Contractors to build their custom waterfront home on Longboat Key, they collaborated with home designer, Jon R. Coulthurst. The team approaches each project with the belief that design concepts are a reflection of the owner's desires and provide the building blocks that are the foundation of any exceptional home. The challenges were numerous for this 25-room home, which included four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a media room, study, library, exercise room and three-car garage that is capable of housing a 9-foot-tall, 23-foot-long van. The first challenge was to overcome the vast differences between the husband's traditional vision and the wife's contemporary taste. The team was able to achieve a design that both Paul and Vicki loved. Because family is such a huge part of their lives, another challenge was to create seperated spaces within the home to accommodate long visits from relatives, children, grandchildren and other guests. Code requirements played a large role particularly with the irregular shaped lot. Solutions came by listening carefully to the homeowners, knowing the code requirements and putting the pieces together into a carefully crafted design. Additionally, after only one preliminary plan of this custom, multi-level home, there were minimal changes from start to finish. This exceptional homes features all interior and exterior LED lighting, a whole home generator with load shedding, and solar and photovoltaic panels, which take this home 100 percent off the grid. This home also has the highest rated vinyl impact low E windows and doors and contains soy-based icynene insulation. One of the most distinctive features is the custom river reclaimed old growth cypress doors and pergolas."
